Tasneem Ali

Hello and welcome to my very new website! I am a 2020 graduate in Sustainable Cities from the University of Leeds, United Kingdom. I completed my undergraduate in Civil Engineering from MAKAUT, India. While in my undergraduate degree, I have been able to witness the cities very closely and its deteriorating environmental conditions, year after year. The present ecological concerns have deeply evoked my sense of involvement as they affect me directly and therefore, I aspire to have a career in sustainable planning and development. With a great interest in working towards the betterment of the world, I have started my first ever website – Through Sustainability where I will be writing on various topics concerning the changing climate and their adaptation and mitigation techniques. The website not only focuses on the developed and evolving countries/cities but also on the remote and challenging regions where survival and access to basic necessities have been a constant issue. Through my website, I aspire to bring a change. I aim to spread more awareness among the current and the upcoming generation so there is more understanding of the uncertain future that we are nearing.

Resilience in the Face of Nature’s Fury in the Hills of Kalimpong and Sikkim

Climate change is exerting significant pressure on the hills of Kalimpong and Sikkim, causing residents to struggle to adapt to shifting weather patterns and unprecedented disasters, particularly during the monsoon season. The situation in the hills of Kalimpong and Sikkim has become even more difficult ever since the Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) in 2023.

Carbon Market Uncovered: Safeguarding the Planet and Protecting Indigenous Rights

Carbon Market enables the trading of carbon credits to offset GHG emissions. However, it faces criticism for “greenwashing” and “Carbon Piracy,” where indigenous communities may be exploited, highlighting the need for stronger regulations and rights protection. Innovations such as blockchain and third-party verification offer transparency, making the market a potential driver of both environmental and social sustainability when managed inclusively and ethically.

Hydropower in the Indian Himalayas: A Renewable Resource Facing Growing Threats

The Himalayan region, with only 20% of its 500 GW potential harnessed, faces significant risks due to its susceptibility to earthquakes, landslides, and floods. Environmental activists argue that construction and deforestation for hydropower projects increase disaster risks.
Experts emphasize the need for more resilient infrastructure, improved early warning systems, and strict compliance with safety regulations.

Unlocking urban sustainability: The rise of Nature based Solutions

Rapid urbanization has amplified the adverse effects of climate change, but nature based solutions offer a promising approach to mitigating these effects. By integrating green spaces, urban forests, and sustainable infrastructure, cities can combat the urban heat island effect, reduce flood risks, and improve air quality. These solutions not only protect human health but also enhance biodiversity and resilience against extreme weather events.

Climate Change: Are we dying, or are we dying?

According to World Meteorological Organization (WMO), a climate related disaster has occurred every day on average in the last 50 years. These disasters are linked to a loss of USD 202 million and killing of 115 people, per day. The frequent and increasing events of flood, drought, wildfires, cyclones, disease outbreaks, food and water security has made it evident that climate change is happening at an accelerated rate than anticipated. The world Health Organization (WHO) has estimated that between 2030 and 2050, an additional 250,000 deaths per year will occur due to heat stress, malnutrition, malaria and diarrhoea. The IPCC report by UN clearly states that a minimum of 3.3 billion people’s daily lives are extremely vulnerable to the changing climate and they are presumed to be 15 times more likely to die from human induced climate change.

Pocket Parks: Small Scale Initiative to Achieve Larger Goal of Urban Sustainability

The country of Greece was recently in the news for all the right reasons of introducing pocket parks in its capital city, Athens. These ecological parks are created in the densely populated localities of Kypseli, Kolonos and Pagrati to subsequently address environmental issues such as urban heat island effect and pollution, while also attempting to bring uniformity in the distribution of green space across the city.
